Purpose
To investigate the state of meibomian glands in eyelash extensions in girls.
Setting
Eyelash extensions are a procedure that is gaining more and more popularity among girls, especially young women, because it allows you to make your eyes more expressive, save time on makeup and emphasize the beauty of your eyes. In an effort to be beautiful, we forget that we can harm our eyes, namely the eyelids.
Methods
We created a survey that consisted of 2 sections containing 9 questions: whether eyelash extensions are used at all, how many eyelash extensions are already in place, and how they feel immediately and over time after the extension. A total of 345 girls (690 eyes) aged 16 to 28 took part in the survey, 86 of them (172 eyes) were eyelash extensions. We divided all the girls who are or have been eyelash extensions into two groups: 1 - those who have extended eyelashes less than 10 times (56 girls, 112 eyes), 2 - more than 10 times (30 girls, 60 eyes). From each group, 20 girls (40 girls, 80 eyes in total) were selected for meibography.
Results
259 girls, 518 eyes (75.1%), do not extend eyelashes, 86 girls, 172 eyes (24.9%) extend eyelashes, of which: 30 girls, 60 eyes (34.9%) do it more than 10 times, 56 girls, 112 eyes (65.1%) do it less than 10 times.
The frequency of the procedure is 58% every 3-4 weeks. Unpleasant sensations after eyelid extensions are experienced by 47.6% (40 girls, 80 eyes), the most common of which is discomfort in the eyes - 53.% (31 girls, 62 eyes).
Results of meibography: girls who had eyelash extensions more than 10 times - 85% (17 girls, 34 eyes) had changes in the meibomian glands; those who had eyelash extensions less than 10 times - 30% (6 girls, 12 eyes), respectively. There was a positive correlation between these two groups = 0.57.
Conclusions
Thus, eyelash extension procedures negatively affect the state of the meibomian glands. 85% of girls who had eyelash extensions more than 10 times had changes in the meibomian glands. There was a positive correlation between the two groups (girls who lash more than 10 times and girls who lash less than 10 times) = 0.57.
