Purpose

Moderate to severe ocular surface staining in dry eye disease poses its challenges during treatment. Longterm anti inflammatory eye drop is the best choice. Autologous serum is an option when the resource is limited. This paper reports successful management of two cases with ocular surface disease refractory with conventional treatment being treated with autologous serum. 

Setting

The patients were collected from JEC Hospital and Eye Clinic during year 2022 to 2023.

 

Methods

This is a retrospective case series with clinical feature moderate to severe ocular surface staining. The patient were evaluated using fluorescein staining.

Results

The two patients ocular surface staining were classified with oxford grading system. One patient already treated with conventional treatment, the other already undergo various intra ocular surgery. Ocular surface staining resolved after the instillation of autologous serum along with the subjective symptoms.

 

Conclusions

Autologous serum is a promising tools for moderate to severe ocular surface disease due to biochemical similarity with tears and its inflammatory effect. It is well tolerated, efficient and more accessible for the government-subsidized patient.
