Purpose

To assess the corneal endothelial changes following the accelerated protocol of epithelium-off corneal cross-linking for the treatment of mild to moderate keratoconus.

Setting

This retrospective study enrolled 43 eyes of 31 patients, with mild to moderate progressive keratoconus who underwent accelerated protocol of CXL.

Methods

The corneal endothelium was evaluated by specular microscopy preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively including endothelial cell density (ECD), coefficient of variation (CV) and percentage of hexagonal cells (%HEX). Corneal thickness was assessed by corneal tomography.

Results

The mean preoperative ECD showed non-significant reduction 1 year postoperatively. There were no significant changes in the mean coefficient of variation or percentage of hexagonal cells at 1 year following CXL.

Conclusions

Corneal endothelial changes following accelerated CXL were minimal with stability of endothelial cell density and non-significant morphological changes.
