Purpose
To Evaluate the efficacy of topical Ibuprofen 0.1% on the improvement of Post-Operative Pseudo-phakic Corneal Edema.
Setting
Al Azhar University Hospital, Cairo & Nour El Hayah Eye Hospital, Cairo
Methods
In the present study; 28 eyes of 28 patients were recruited and diagnosed with Postoperative pseudophakic corneal edema.
Inclusion criteria involves:
1-Patients with significant edema confirmed by corneal OCT
2-Pachymetry more than 700 microns
3-Patients presenting with a low endothelial count less than 1200 mm2
All patients received an informed consent of the inclusion in the current study. During 4 weeks, enrolled patients received a topical eye drops treatment of Ibuprofen 0.1% (Talent Pharma-Egypt) in glycerol form t.d.s. . A full Ophthalmological examination was performed including BCVA, IOP, anterior and posterior segment exam. Also Pre and Post treatment one month comparative OCT exam was performed (Optuve TIC) and specular microscopy.
Results
No adverse conditions or idiosyncrasy were recorded for any patient. Visual acuity improved in 21 eyes (75%) with 12 eyes improving in 2 or more lines. No patient lost any line of BCVA during the study. The OCT findings present a mean of 82 microns (94-38) reduction of corneal thickness. Also in 7 patients endothelial count improved significantly up to 12%.
Conclusions
The use of ibuprofen 0.1% for pseudophakic corneal edema is a safe and useful adjuvant in the treatment of such disease. Long term future studies might help to identify and refine the dosage and duration of use.
