Purpose

Analysis of visual and functional results at 3 months for Vivinex Gemetric® and Gemetric Plus® trifocal IOLs (Hoya).

Setting

These pseudophakic implants combine 2 diffractive gratings offering an additional +1.75 and +3.5 D effect, with different light distribution.

Methods

The study was a prospective monocentric study with bilateral implantation. The Gemetric Plus® lens benefits from a design that theoretically provides comfort in near vision, while the Gemetric® targeted for far and intermediate vision was implanted on the dominant eye. Visual acuity at 3 distances (4m, 60cm and 35cm), reading speed and defocus curve were measured at 3 months.

Results

30 patients received this combination of IOLs. Mean monocular uncorrected visual acuity at 4m, 60cm and 33cm was 0.9, 0.63 and 0.8 respectively (in favor of the Plus model) at 3 months. The binocular defocus curve shows a bipolar pattern in the distance and near foci, with a plate in the intermediate zone. Average binocular reading speed was 100 words/min, while 95% of patients achieved independence from glasses.

Conclusions

The quest for continuous defocusing and improved visual performance at near and in the intermediate zone underpins the design of these complementary optics.

In addition to studies reported on the synergistic combination of Gemetric® implants, our work demonstrates the added value in terms of vision quality.
