Visual Outcomes After Binocular Femtosecond Laser Assisted Refractive Lens Exchange And Implantation Of A Diffractive Trifocal Iol

Purpose

To evaluate the outcomes including visual performance, contrast sensitivity and patient reported outcomes after binocular refractive lens exchange and implantation of the new Clareon PanOptix IOL (Alcon, Fort Worth, TX, USA). The studied IOL is made of a glistening free hydrophobic acrylic and the successor of the AcrySof IQ PanOptix.

Setting

This prospective, interventional clinical study was conducted at the University Eye Clinic Heidelberg in Germany.

Methods

In this on study, bilateral delayed sequential femtosecond laser assisted refractive lens exchange and implantation of the Clareon PanOptix IOL is performed in 56 eyes of 28 patients. Postoperative follow-up at 3 months includes uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuity, uncorrected (UIVA) and distance corrected intermediate (DCIVA) visual acuity at 60 cm, uncorrected (UNVA) and distance corrected (DCNVA) near visual acuity at 40 and 33 cm. Defocus curve testing with distance correction and contrast sensitivity testing under photopic and mesopic conditions were also part of the 3 months follow-up visit.

Results

So far, 27 patients with a mean age of 55 ± 5 years have been enrolled in the study. Surgery has already been performed in 54 eyes of 27 patients. Postoperatively binocular UDVA and CDVA were -0.02 ± 0.06 and -0.11 ± 0.05 logMAR. UIVA and DCIVA were -0.07 ± 0.05 and -0.07 ± 0.07 logMAR, UNVA and DCNVA were 0.03 ± 0.09 and -0.01 ± 0.06 logMAR at 40 cm and 0.07 ± 0.10 and 0.03 ± 0.08 at 33 cm, respectively. The defocus curve revealed a visual acuity of 0.10 logMAR or better from +0.5 to -3.0 diopters. Photopic contrast sensitivity at spatial frequencies 3.0, 6.0, 12.0 and 18.0 was 1.83 ± 0.17, 1.87 ± 0.23, 1.50 ± 0.36 and 0.96 ± 0.18 log units

Conclusions

 The Clareon PanOptix IOL provided very good distance, intermediate and near visual outcomes. Defocus curve testing revealed a visual acuity of 0.10 logMAR or better from +0.5 to -3.0 diopters. Contrast sensitivity was within the normal range.
