Purpose
To assess the performance on the optical bench and the visual results in the clinic of a new trifocal intraocular lens with diffractive-refractive-aspheric technology.
Setting
Instituto Universitario Fernández-Vega (Oviedo), España.
Methods
The Optiflex Trio lens (Biotech, Switzerland) is listed as a trifocal lens with a diffractive-refractive-aspherical design. The study on an optical bench (Polytechnic University of Catalonia) was carried out on a +20.0 diopter (D) lens, according to the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) eye model; Image quality was judged by modulation transfer function (MTF). The clinical study includes a sample of 25 patients (50 eyes) who underwent lensectomy using femtosecond laser-assisted phacoemulsification. The inclusion criteria in the study were: age between 55 and 75 years, and axial length between 22.0 and 26.0 mm. Distance visual acuity and defocus curve were analyzed.
Results
On the optical bench, the lens shows three well-defined foci in the MTF; distance focus, intermediate focus at +1.80 D and a close focus at +3.50 D (3.0 mm aperture diaphragm). In the clinical study, at 12 months, the mean corrected distance visual acuity (LCCA) was 0.94±0.09 (Snellen scale). 87.5% of eyes were within ±0.50 D of spherical equivalent. The mean binocular BCVA at 66, 50, 40 and 33 cm was always greater than 0.9.
Conclusions
On the optical bench, the MTF shows the near focus with an addition of +3.50 D and the intermediate focus of +1.80 D. In the clinic, a defocus curve is obtained with a visual acuity always greater than 0.9, from the distance focus to the near focus (39 cm).
