Knowledge Of Candidate Patients For Multifocal Intraocular Lenses And Their Acceptance Of These Lenses

Purpose

To evaluate knowledge of candidate patients for premium multifocal lenses and their acceptance of these lenses. Identification of the factors for a better acceptance to this IOL in pupose for a better quality of life regarding  the vision.

Setting

Departament of Ophthalmology, International Eye Clinic, Tirana, Albania

Methods

The research was done in the Departament of Ophthalmology, International Eye Clinic, Tirana, Albania on 213 patients who were diagnosed with cataract and were suitable candidate for multifocal IOLs implantation. The research was conducted in the period from September 2023 to February 2024. The measuring instrument of this research was an anonymus questionnaire survey created for the purpose of this research.

Results

The research included 213 patients. Statistic showed that 73% of all patients had never heard before about multifocal IOLs, the other part has heard the first time 41% from friends, 19% from TV, 10% from ophthalmologists,22% from their children, 8% from social networks. 

21% of the patients know that after implantation of multifocal IOL the patient can see in all distances and doesn’t need glasses for near.

67% of the patients has answered that multifocal IOLs is a big step in ophthalmology in quality of life regarding the vision. 

62 % of the patients didn't want to be implanted multifocal IOL, 23% of them because they didn’t knew multifocal IOLs, 59% of them didn’t know doctors experience, 18% because they are afraid from the complications.

Conclusions

The research has shown that patiens haven’t enough information about multifocal IOLs and they don’t know the big opportunity in quality of life in terms of vision that these multifocal IOLs can give to them. Is necessary to extend the information of the patients about multifocal IOLs with quality informations in primary care, TV or other ways to make patients aware of a quality life in terms of vision in the third age.
