Purpose
To evaluate the optical outcomes after implantation of an EDOF intraocular lens (IOL) and diffractive trifocal IOL in the same patient.
Setting
Eye Day Clinic, One Day Clinic, Athens
Methods
Patients with no ocular abnormalities except from cataract formation were selected to implant an EDOF IOL in the dominant eye and a diffractive IOL in the non-dominant eye. Visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, wavefront aberrometry and VF-7 questionnaire were evaluated.
Results
60 eyes of 30 patients were enrolled in the study. EDOF IOL showed better results at distance visual acuity while trifocal IOL showed better results in near vision with the same outcome in intermediate distance. Contrast sensitivity revealed with no statistical significant differences between EDOF and trifocal IOL p>0.05. Decentration and tilt showed no significance between the two lenses. Wavefront analysis revealed with no differences in total and internal high order aberration (HOA) at 3mm and full pupil diameter (p>0.05). Some optical phenomena were observed and satisfying results of questionnaire were obtained.
Conclusions
Implantation of an EDOF IOL in the dominant eye and a trifocal IOL in the non-dominant eye in the same patient showed overall excellent visual outcomes in all distances with minor optical phenomena.
