Purpose

To compare the visual results and patient satisfaction of two extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting

Retrospective Study

Methods

The medical records and self-reported questionnaires of patients who underwent bilateral implantation of the Symphony or Vivity IOLs were compared for uncorrected visual acuity (VA), spectacle independence, patient satisfaction, and photic phenomena

Results

The Symfony IOL, group A (100 eyes), had better distance uncorrected VA, similar intermediate uncorrected VA, and a tendency for worse near uncorrected VA compared with the Vivity IOL, group B (50 eyes): 0.07 ± 0.09 vs 0.12 ± 0.09; p=0.003, 0.10 ± 0.12 vs 0.12 ± 0.12, p=0.340, and 0.31 ± 0.18 vs 0.22 ± 0.17; p=0.056 respectively.

Spectacle independence for distance, intermediate, and near vision was similar 48/50 (96.0%) vs 25/25 (100%), p= 0.550, 45/50 (90.0%) vs 21/25 (84.0%), p= 0.470, and 29/50(58%) vs 10/25 (40%), p= 0.141, in group A and B, respectively.The proportion of patients that reported photic phenomena was similar in both groups: 7/50 (14.0%) vs 3/25 (12.0%), p>0.999.

Conclusions

Both EDOF lenses provide good visual outcomes at distance and intermediate with acceptable near vision. Similar rate of photic phenomena was reported for both IOLs
