Purpose
To assess the visual outcomes of LuxSmart IOLs (Bausch & Lomb) with micro- monovision
Setting
Oftalmosalud Institute of Eyes, Lima, Peru.
Methods
A cross-sectional observational study from June 2022 to July 2023 at the Eye Institute of Oftalmosalud in Lima, Peru. 62 patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery had EDOF IOLs LuxSmart (Bausch & Lomb, Berlin, Germany) implanted using a micro-monovision approach. Astigmatism over 1,4 diopters, pupil diameter under 2mm, or patients with other ocular pathologies were not included in the study. Follow-up was done one day, one week, and a month post-surgery, where DCVA was taken. DCNVA was taken until the one-week and month control according to the Snellen/jaeger chart. Binocular defocus curve was performed at 1-month follow-up for all patients.
Results
126 eyes of 64 patients were evaluated with a mean age of 63.3 ± 10.2. Preoperative UDVA and CDVA was 0.58 ± 0.34 (LogMAR) and 0.16 ± 0.24 respectively. Postoperative UDVA was 0.18 ± 0.15, with a CDVA 0.05 ± 0.09 being statistically significant in both cases (p < 0.0001). Preoperative SE was 0.06 ± 2.38 and postoperative -0.43 ± 0.46 (p< 0.0014). The Binocular defocus curve had a mean VA of -0.01 at vergence 0.00 with a drop progressive drop reaching a mean VA of 0.25 at -2.0 vergence.
Conclusions
Micro-monovision with LuxSmart EDOF IOL had good visual outcomes for long and intermediate vision with a good near vision as demonstrated in the defocus curve, making them an excellent option for patients with undemanding near VA.
