Extended Depth Of Focus Edof Iol In Asian Eyes : Analysis Of Visual Outcomes That Aide To Define The Selection Criteria

To evaluate the visual outcome distance , near and intermediate and analysis of same that aide to define selection criteria for cataract patients.

Single surgeon series in a private practice setting.

This retrospective case review comprised 41 eyes  who had simultaneous or sequential bilateral cataract surgery. Microincision phacoemulsification with EDOF intraocular lens, and EDOF toric IOL for patients with cylinder > 0.75 dioptre, implantation for each eye. Outcome measures were postoperative uniocular and binocular unaided distance, near and intermediate vision.

95.1 percent (39 eyes) achieved an near vision acuity of N6 and N8 intermediate vision on post-operative day one. Rest 4.8 percent (2 eyes) had near vision N8 and N12 intermediate vision post-operative day one, same patient both eyes. Striking observation in our series was that 100 percent of our patients (41 eyes) had BCVA of 6/9 on post op day one . Two eyes of one patient (4.8 percent) achieved 6/6 p vision by end of 1 month.  There were no intraoperative or post-operative complications that resulted in visual loss.

Even though EDOF IOL achieve good distance , near and intermediate vision , these IOL should be avoided in patients who never had distance glasses, had pre-operative BCVA of 6/6 or better or in occupations where 6/6 vision is a pre requisite like pilots, driver etc.
