Purpose
To evaluate binocular vision and subjective photic disturbances (halos, glare and starburst) after the implantation of intraocular lenses between the SIFI WELL FUSION EDOF system and three trifocal IOL (PHYSIOL Finevision, ALCON Clareon Panoptix and AST Asqelio Trifocal).
Setting
Clínica Castanera TACIR, Barcelona, SPAIN
Methods
A prospective study of 40 (80 eyes) patients who underwent facoemulsification surgery with IOL implantation divided in 4 different groups:
- Group 1: 10 patients (20 eyes) with the implantation of SIFI Well Fusion System
- Group 2: 10 patients (20 eyes) with the implantation of PHYSIOL Finevision
- Group 3: 10 patients (20 eyes) with the implantation of ALCON Clareon Panoptix
- Group 4: 10 patients (20 eyes) with the implantation of AST Asqelio Trifocal
Binocular visual acuity was assessed for all patients in long, intermediate and short distance. Subjective photic disturbances were evaluated with the Halo and Glare Simulator (ViSU-L GmbH, Germany).
Results
Visual acuity in long and intermediate distance was comparable between the 4 groups, with some mild differentiation between all groups. Short distance, as expected, was a little bit lower in the Well fusion system than y the trifocal lenses.
Regarding subjective photic disturbances Well Fusion had less amount than the other IOL. There was a different pattern of dominance of the different photic disturbances between the different types of IOL.
Conclusions
The SIFI Well Fusion system is a possibility when you want to minimise photic disturbance in patients that would tolerate an optimization at 33 cm in the short distance visual acuity, with a good intermediate and long distance visual acuity.
The trifocals IOL would be an option if you want to reach shorter near distances as well as long and intermediate and the patient can tolerate some photic disturbances.
