Purpose
To assess the available literature of refractive lensectomy strategies in patients with previous hyperopic refractive surgery.
Setting
Corneal refractive laser surgery has been widespread performed during the last 30-40 years; however, the lensectomy in these patients, is challenging for the surgeon because of intraocular lens calculation (less accurate after corneal laser surgery) and the adequate type of intraocular lens (IOL) choice.
Methods
A systematic search was performed in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase until February 12th, 2024. The study was performed in compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses – Scoping Review (PRISMA-SR) reporting guidelines. Eligible articles were independently screened and quality assessed by 2 reviewers. Articles were not excluded based on their design, language or date of publication. Data was extracted and a qualitative synthesis was performed.
Results
11 articles reporting refractive lensectomy strategies in patients with previous history of hyperopic refractive surgery and 5 articles, with previous myopic or hyperopic refractive surgery were assessed. Most of the articles addressed lens calculation formulas and some of them, addressed visual outcomes. Few studies reported a long-follow-up period. Some studies suggested the choice of multifocal IOL for lensectomy. There’s no consensus regarding the better lens calculation formula.
Conclusions
The evidence of refractive lensectomy strategies in patients with previous hyperopic refractive surgery is scarce. Most available studies are focused on IOL lens calculation and type of lens.
