Purpose

PURPOSE: Extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOLs) ensure sharp vision for far and intermediate distances, such as when viewing a computer screen or a car dashboard. Uncorrected astigmatism can significantly reduce visual outcomes, especially in the case of presbyopia-correcting IOLs. Stable and optically well-designed toric IOL can enhance visual outcomes and reduce dysphotopic visual disturbances. The current investigation examines the performance and visual outcome of ELON 877 PETY IOL (Medicontur) in terms of presbyopia and astigmatism correction.

Setting

Tygervalley Eye and Laser Centre, Cape Town, south Africa

Methods

The research aims to test the efficacy of an EDOF lens designed for the simultaneous correction of presbyopia and astigmatism. ELON 877PETY lenses were implanted, which apply wavefront-linking technology to achieve appropriate visual acuity for distance and intermediate vision.  The follow-up period was at least 3 months. The residual astigmatism and sphere, were measured at each fo IOL Rotational  stability was also checked each time. Uncorrected and corrected visual acuities were measured for far, intermediate, and near distances. Binocular visual acuity and contrast sensitivity defocus curves were depicted. Patient visual functions, dysphotopsia, and its effect on daily activities were also assessed.

Results

RESULTS: Initial results show real EDOF performance with excellent distance and intermediate vision, and surprisingly good near vision. All of the patients were within 1.0 diopter from the target emmetropic refraction, both for spherical equivalent and cylindric power. No significant IOL rotation could be observed. All patients reported excellent visual functions regardless of viewing distance and did not complain about major visual disturbances.

Conclusions

EDOF toric IOLs effectively restored vision for distance and intermediate distances. Preoperative corneal astigmatism could be effectively corrected. Furthermore, near vision exceeded expectations. Both the refractive and visual outcomes were stable long-term. The 877PETY (ELON) IOLs manufactured by Medicontur seem to be a competitive solution for astigmatic patients seeking multifocal vision and ensure a high quality of life daily
