Purpose
To evaluate the safety, efficacy and functional vision with the bilateral implantation of Hoya Vivinex Gemetric IOL in one eye and Hoya Vivinex Gemetric Plus IOL in the other eye.
Setting
Nethradhama Superspeciality Eye Hospital, Bangalore, India.
Methods
In this prospective study, patients who met the eligibility criteria and underwent cataract surgery with Hoya Vivinex Gemetric IOL in one eye and Hoya Vivinex Gemetric Plus IOL in the other eye were included. The primary end points were binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity(UCIVA) at 40cm, 60cm and 80 cm and uncorrected near visual acuity(UNVA). Defocus curves, contrast sensitivity with FACT CSV, reading speeds using Salzburg Reading Desk and aberrometry using iTrace for total and higher order aberrations were also assessed.
Results
60 eyes of 30 patients were included. At 2 weeks followup, all patients attained a binocular UDVA of 20/20 Snellen’s equivalent. At 80 cm, 60 cm and 40cm, the average binocular UCIVA calculated was 0.117±0.72, 0.057±0.97 and 0.971±0.12 LogMAR units respectively. Thebinocular UNVA performance of >0.11 LogMARunits was recorded in all the patients. No patient reported of any significant haloes, glare or significant dysphotopsia on asking leading questions.
Conclusions
The Hoya Vivinex Gemetric and Gemetric Plus IOLs when paired together by bilateral implantation appears to provide a continuous range of vision from distance, intermediate to near resulting in good patient satisfaction, spectacle independence and minimal photic phenomenon
