Purpose

aim: to report the visual outcomes complication and refractive results of phacoemulsification surgery and in extremely short nanophthalmic eyes.

 

 

 

Setting

nanophthalmopus was diagnosed with axial lenght less than 19.5mm

 

the records of 17 patients with nanophthalmia who underwent phacoemulsification surgery between january 2021 and june 2023 were retrospectively reviewed

Methods

the records were reviewed for ocular diagnosis, keratometry, anterior chamber depth. axial length, ocular surgery, visual acuity refraction and complications.

Results

results:

 a total of 17 eyes of 9 patients with a median age of 28 and maena axial length of 16.75 and mean ACD of 2.8mm were operated upon by the same surgeon at King Hussen medical center in Jordan. and resulted in in similar or better BCVA in all 17 eyes. mean preoperative spherical equivilent was +12.73 that reduced to be +2.14 postoperatively.

the most common complication found was cystid macular edema 23% of eyes.

Conclusions

conlusion: small eyes can present challenges that if adressed carefuly would result in excellent outcome.
