Purpose

To compare the patients underwent scleral fixation with Yamane technique according to simultaneously perfomed with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) or not.

Setting

This is a retrospective study.

Methods

Total of 37 patients were recruited in our study. The 18 of them were performed simultaneously with PPV. Only Yamane technique was performed for the patients with aphakia for various reasons. The final lens position, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spehrical equivalent, complication rate and optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings were recorded.

Results

The duration time of aphakia before intraocular lens (IOL) implantation was varied from 1 month to 23 years. Postoperative BCVA was increased in both groups but there was no difference statistically. (With PPV 0.42±0.34, without PPV 0.32±0.26, p=0.33) Spherical equivalent was not statistically different between groups. (With PPV 0.29±1.08, without PPV 0.65±2.23, p=0.53) There was no difference between groups in terms of complication rate, postoperative IOL position and OCT findings.

Conclusions

According to our results, there is no difference in terms of safety or efficiency, between two technique. It would be appropriate to make a decision based on surgeon’s experience and patient’s systemic and ocular situation.
