Purpose

To investigate the improvement in visual acuity and patient satisfaction after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in pseudophakic patients who were dissatisfied after implantation of trifocal intraocular lenses.

Setting

Eye Hospital,Pristina,Kosovo

Methods

This retrospective study included 124 patients (162 eyes) who underwent cataract surgery with ZEISS AT LISA tri 839MP IOL implantation. Preoperative myopic refraction was between -1.0 and -2.75 diopters (D) and astigmatism was between -0.75 and -2.50 D. SMILE was applied to patients who were dissatisfied after cataract surgery and these patients were followed for an average of 1 year.

Results

The uncorrected distance visual acuity increased from 0.66 ± 0.07 logMAR preoperatively to 0.07 ± 0.02 logMAR at 12 months postoperatively (p< 0.001). we benefited from this feature of the trifocal lens and increased the distance and intermediate vision ratio without compromising the comfort of near vision.

Conclusions

The SMILE technique is a safe and effective treatment modality for pseudophakic myopic fractures to improve the visual outcomes and satisfaction of patients after trifocal IOL implantation
