Purpose
To assess the competence and training of post graduate residents and surgeons in phacoemulsification by using a new tool International Council of Ophthalmology- Ophthalmic Surgical Competency and Assessment Rubric(ICO-OSCAR) phacorubrics.
Setting
It is a prospective non-blinded interventional test design.
Methods
The tool ICO-OSCAR phacorubrics was used to assess the surgeon's competence step by step during surgery.Marks were given and assessed individually on each and every step.Participants were graded before the start of training and then after training by intra-class correlation,using pre-validated ICO-OSCAR rubrics questionnaire at the beginning and end of study.
Results
Trainees were able to master and follow all the steps sequentially.They learned and developed skills faster as compared to conventional approaches of teaching and assessment tool.
Conclusions
ICO-OSCAR phacorubrics is a valid, effective and reliable assessment tool that could be satisfactorily applied in training of junior surgeons and residents to comply with emerging trends in ophthalmic surgery.
