Purpose
A retrospective study was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of an EDOF Acrylic Hidrophobic IOL. This lens has an asphericity modulation design with the combination of 4th and 6th orders of spherical aberrations of opposite signs (LuxSmart™ Toric, Bausch&Lomb).
The main purpose of our study was to evaluate the residual postoperative (postOp) astigmatism after the implantation of this IOL.
The secondary objectives were to analyze the postOp results of uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at different distances (far, near and intermediate), and residual refraction. The postOp results of the defocus curves and satisfaction in visual quality of patients were also studied.
Setting
Centro Oftalmológico Integral – MIRANZA COI Bilbao.
Rodríguez Arias 6º, Bilbao (Basque Country), Spain.
Methods
We included 26 eyes of 26 patients with diagnosis of bilateral cataract and preoperative corneal astigmatism greater than 1.00 D; and excluding any patient with any ocular comorbidity
All surgeries were performed without complications and the LuxSmart™ toric IOL was implanted.
UCVA and BCVA at 4m, 80cm, 40cm and 33cm in controlled photopic conditions were reviewed at first week, one month and three months postOp.
At the 3-month follow up visit, a monocular defocus curve was performed at a 4m distance, as well as a binocular defocus curve in patients who underwent surgery for the leading eye with the same IOL.
Finally, all patients filled out a satisfaction questionnaire -CataQuest 9SF- in the preOp visit and at the 3 months postOp visit.
Results
The mean residual ES was 0.15 and the residual cylinder less than or equal to 0.50 D in 76.9% of the patients and less than or equal to equal to 1.0D in 96.15% of the patients. The mean UDVA at 3 months postOP has been 0.08 LogMAR and mean CDVA 0.02 LogMAR.
The monocular defocus curve at 3 months postOp showed a typical EDOF lens performance. Mean BCVA at 65cm was 0.1 LogMAR.
The results obtained at monocular contrast sensitivity curve with far distance correction are 74.5±7.83.
The mean deviation has been 5.14±5.34º at 3 months postop measured with OPD Scan System.
The score of the CataQuest showed very good outcomes in distance and intermediate vision and not so good at near distance after the LuxSmart™ toric IOL implantation.
Conclusions
The LuxSmart™ Toric Bausch&Lomb IOL is a safe and reliable option when correcting corneal astigmatism after cataract surgery that shows good rotational stability and predictability.
This lens exhibits excellent distance and intermediate visual quality and, in our experience, meets the established criteria for EDOF lenses. The CATQUEST 9SF results reflect a good or very good result in the questions referring to distance vision and, as expected, not so good at near distance.
The new platforms available today allow us to find the most appropriate option for each of our patients, thus allowing us to individualize and find the best solution for each of them.
