Purpose

To assess the monocular visual outcomes of a new enhanced monofocal IOL (Evolux, SIFI) implanted in patients with cataract surgery and to compare them to those obtained with a standard monofocal aspheric IOL (Acrysof SN60WF, Alcon)

Setting

Private clinic

Methods

One month after surgery, DCVA (4m), DCIVA (at 66cm), DCNVA (at 40cm) and monocular defocus curve were compared between the two groups. Additionally, patients with the enhanced monofocal IOL underwent contrast sensitivity testing under photopic and mesopic conditions, subjective visual disturbances questionnaire by McAlinden as well as total and corneal aberrometry

Results

Preliminary result in 17 eyes show that the DCIVA and DCNVA of the monofocal enhanced IOL were superior than the corresponding value of the standard monofocal (p<0.0001), whereas no statistically significant differences were detected for the DCVA. The defocus curve revealed statistically significantly higher visual acuity for the focus ranging from -1D and -3D (p<0.0001). Mesopic and photopic contrast sensitivity was within the normal range in both groups. There were no reports of night-time visual disturbances.

Conclusions

The new enhanced monofocal IOL provides patients with improved DCIVA and DCNVA compared to the standard monofocal IOL with no loss of contrast sensitivity and no subjective visual disturbances.
