Purpose
To report a case of scleral thinning and necrosis following cosmetic eye-whitening procedure
Setting
Bilateral eye-whitening procedure performed with complications of scleral thinning and necrosis requiring tectonic corneal patch grafting
Report of case
A 43 year old Chinese female had bilateral eye whitening procedure performed in China. This consisted of conjunctivectomy with postoperative topical mitomycin C 0.02% application. 3 years after the procedures she presented with symptoms of bilateral eye redness and pain. On examination the visual acuity was 6/7.5 in both eyes. In both eyes there was nasal and temporal scleral thinning with scleral necrosis and plaque formation seen in the right nasal aspect and left temporal aspect of the sclera. She underwent a tectonic right and left corneal patch grafting with conjunctival graft and fibrin glue
Conclusion/Take home message
Cosmetic Eye Whitening procedure is associated with a high incidence of serious complications such as scleral thinning and necrosis and should not be performed.
