Purpose

To evalaluate the safety and efficiacy of employing ray tracing optimization for symptomatic eyes previously treated with corneal laser vision correction (cLVC).

Setting

The Laservision Clinical and Research Institute, Athens, Greece

Methods

Twenty-two eyes of 15 patients some with residual refractive error, all with significant high order aberrations (HOA) after primary cLVC were treated with ray-tracing customized surface ablation using the Alcon/WaveLight EX500 excimer and the Wavelight Plus automated software. Peri-operative visual function: UDVA, CDVA, SE, DE, HOA and contrast sensitivity were evaluated

Results

Mean follow-up was 6 months (range: 3 to 23 months. In mean values UDVA improved from 20/32 to 20/20, CDVA 20/60 to 20/16, SE: +0.1 (+0.25 to -0.27 D) DE: -0.2, HOA: from RMSh of 0.8 um to 0,35 respectively, as well as improved CS in all special frequencies. All patients gained at least one line of acuity, no loss of CDVA in any case.

Conclusions

Based on this small series, customized raytracing optimized enhancements in patients who have had previous cLVC to be safe and effective in correcting residual refractive error, but mainly in reducing HOA, and respective visual function by addressing total eye optics.
