Purpose

A clinical case review to present the importance od detailed, high- precision investigations for SMILE PRO refractive laser surgery and also other ( PRK, LASIK, SMILE ), and conclude with challenging cases in SMILE PRO.

Setting

We are an network of 6 clinics, operating with Visumax 800 Carl Zeiss SMILE PRO surgery. We have all the preoperative investigations for this surgery and we recently observe more cases of keratoconus borderline results. We introduced a new ultrasound ArcScan investigation to prevent ectasia and have more precise diagnostic.

Methods

We reviewed the results of investigations for patients using MS-39 topography, ArcScan Insight 100 corneal ultrasound in cases with borderline keratoconus results. Study case for selected cases of Second Generation Lenticular surgery performed with Smile Pro, including a case of nystagmus and a case where the pacient moved the eye, who was operable on Second Generation lenticular surgery.

Results

SMILE Pro patients need to undergo intensive investigations in order to exclude keratoconus and other problems, to prevent ectasia. All the patients included in our review, operated on Second Generation Lenticular surgery technique reported faster recovery compared to any other refractive techniques, a decrease in the feeling of claustrophobia, increased comfort due to the short time and good vision afterwards, The surgery is possible in cases who were not operable on previous techniques.

Conclusions

We need to use a combination of technology and investigations in order to have a compete insight of the patient case. Latest investigation techniques are a necessity for SMILE PRO surgery.
