Purpose

To evaluate moderate to high astigmatism corrections (above 2 diopters (D) of a cylinder) on the outcomes of SmartSight lenticule extraction for myopic astigmatism with a new femtosecond laser system.

Setting

Eye Clinic Svjetlost, Zagreb, Croatia

Methods

33 eyes of 24 patients consecutively treated for myopic astigmatism with astigmatism magnitude over 2 D were evaluated at the 3-month follow-up. The mean age of the patients was 30,65±6.91 years with a mean spherical equivalent of -5.07±2.20 D and a mean magnitude of refractive astigmatism of 2.74±0.71 D.

Results

At 3 months, manifest astigmatism was 0.35±0.30D; uncorrected and corrected visual acuities (UDVA and CDVA, respectively) were 0.0±0.1logMAR; differences between postop UDVA and preop CDVA along with change in CDVA were +0.5±0.8lines better the preoperatively (p<0.004).

Conclusions

Lenticule extraction treatment using SmartSight is safe and efficacious at 3-months. Findings suggest that moderate to high astigmatism improves after SmartSight lenticule extraction in the treatment of myopic astigmatism.
