Purpose

To evaluate outcomes of SMILE PRO surgery using the VISUMAX 800 for correcting myopic astigmatism.

Setting

Hong Son Eye Hospital, Ha Noi, Viet Nam.

Methods

Retrospective study in 756 eyes of 364 patients with myopic astigmatism treated with SMILE PRO surgery at Hong Son Eye Hospital, Viet Nam from June to October in 2023. Patients with sphere up to – 10.00 D, astigmatism up to – 5.00 D, age between 18 and 40 years old, a preoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) of 20/25 or better. Follow up at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months . Outcomes were analyzed with SPSS 20.0 and vector analysis was performed by the Alpins method.

Results

The preoperative mean spherical equivalent refraction (SEQ) was – 5.92 ± 2.26 D (range: - 1.00 to - 12.50 D) and reduced significantly at 1 month (- 0.04 ± 0.46 D; P < 0.05) and remained stable until 3 months. The SEQ was maintained within ± 0.50 D in 84.3 % and ± 1.00 D in 98.1 % of eyes. The uncorrected distance visual acuity was 20/25 or better in 92.9 % of eyes at 3 months. The postoperative astigmatism was under 0.50 D in 78.3% of eyes and under 1.00 D in 98% of eyes. One line of CDVA was lost in 0.13 % of eyes and no eyes lost two or more lines. One eye had suction loss during the operation, no other complications.

Conclusions

SMILE PRO surgery with the VISUMAX 800 is a safe and effective treatment for myopic astigmatism patients.
