Purpose
The use of intrastromal refractive lenticule designed for myopia correction has proven to be safe and effective, but so far represented by one single product (Visumax ® – Zeiss).
The recent introduction of new platforms, such as the Elita J&J (SILK), is democratizing lenticular surgery. Comparing these two platforms is a real challenge in terms of technical aspect and visual performance.
Setting
We conducted a prospective study, 60 patients underwent bilateral lenticular surgery, divided in 2 groups of 30, to compare Visumax 800 ® and SILK ®.
Methods
Patients had myopia ranging from -0.75 to 7D, with or without astigmatism from 0.5 to -3.5D. Results were studied at 3 months, including refractive outcome and visual quality (QOV10 questionnaire, i.tracey aberrometry).
Results
No intraoperative complications, neither setting of the docking or lenticule extraction are reported concerning the 2 platforms.
No significant differences were found in refractive outcomes or visual quality symptoms. Over 90% of patients in both groups were within ±0.5D of emmetropia. Visual recovery took an average between 2 to 4 days with some initial night halos.
Conclusions
The monopoly of lenticular surgery by the ZEISS platform has been resolved, with new manufacturers aiming to disrupt the market. In our experience, SILK and SMILE show no significant differences; ease of use, ergonomy and the learning curve may influence the choice between the two platforms.
