Purpose

To report satisfaction results of patients one year after undergoing SMILE Pro with the VISUMAX 800.

Setting

University Hospital Gießen and Marburg, Marburg, Germany

Methods

The data was collected as part of a retrospective analysis of subjects that underwent SMILE Pro
using the VISUMAX 800 femtosecond laser (Carl Zeiss Meditec) between June 2021 and February 2024. Subjects were provided a questionnaire at the preoperative, 6-month, and 12-month visits. The questionnaire was adapted from components of the FDA PROWL questionnaire. The satisfaction portion of the questionnaire consisted of questions relating to the procedure, vision, spectacle wear, and recommendation to friends and family.

Results

At the time of analysis, 31 bilaterally treated subjects completed the 12-month visit and 29 filled out a questionnaire. The summed (e.g., completely satisfied, very satisfied, and somewhat satisfied) results showed 97% reported being satisfied with the results, 97% were satisfied with visual recovery time, 93% were satisfied with speed of resolution of any postop symptoms, 93% felt the surgery met their visual expectations, 100% were wearing glasses none of the time, 97% felt they achieved their goals for SMILE, 93% were happy they had SMILE, 93% would choose SMILE if they had to do it all over again, and 97% would recommend SMILE to a friend or family member. One subject would not have SMILE again and one subject was unhappy.

Conclusions

SMILE with the VISUMAX 800 provides a high level of patient satisfaction and spectacle independence.
