Purpose

Small incision lenticular extraction is well knownt refractive procedure that provides excellent refractive outcomes. However, starting this refractive procedure over and under- corrections still occur. That is why, this is crucial for every surgeon to create their own specific nomogram to achieve optimal refractive outcomes.

Setting

Study was performed in the private clinic settings. 50 eyes of 25 patients were analysed during this clinical study. Femto-LASER, Visumax 800, from Carl Zeiss Meditec was used to perform SMILE surgery in every case.

Methods

It is prospective cohort study. Patient with mild to moderate myopia who underwent SMILE surgery between February 2023 and February 2024 were recruited to the study.

Patients were exams preoperatively and 1,3, months after the surgery. The examinations included uncorrected distance visual acuity, corrected distance visual acuity, refractometry data, preoperatively and postoperatively, cycloplegic refraction. Also inputted laser settings were taken into account. To create a nomogram we used DataGraph program.

Results

This study involved 50 eyes, The average preoperativel spherical equivalent was -3.75+/-0.21 D. 3 months after the surgery the effectiveness index was 1.03+/- 0.11. And the safety index was 1.00+/- 0.12. 2 eyes underwent enhancement after SMILE surgery and were matched as outliers.

Conclusions

Nomogram is a powerful tool to enhance refractive outcome after SMILE surgery. Moreover depending from the number of the cases performed, nomogram can perform better.
