Purpose
To Introduce the intraoperative complications of refractive small incision lenticule extraction, how to manage and avoid.
We describe the stepwise management of these complications. Approaches to try to minimize these complications.
Setting
Al Mashreq Eye Center, Cairo, Egypt.
Methods
This prospective, single-center, cohort clinical study was done on patients with myopia and myopic astigmatism, who were enrolled for SMILE surgeries. All the SMILE operations were performed by a single refractive surgeon.
Results
A total of 500 eyes were operated upon, with a mean follow-up period of 3 months. The intraoperative complications have been recorded for all patients. The mean operative duration of all cases was 4.45±1.45 minutes.
Conclusions
SMILE is technically more demanding than excimer based surgical approaches, with a different complication profile. The present chapter reviews current literature on SMILE related complications.
Complications encountered intraoperatively, including cap-lenticular adhesion, lenticular rupture, and retained partial lenticular fragment
