Purpose
to report a case of retinal toxicity after intracameral use of cefuroxime at the end of cataract surgery
Setting
Ophthalmology Department, General Hospital of Larisa, Larisa, Greece
Report of case
A 78-year-old- female patient underwent uneventful left phacoemulsification surgery using a standard dose of intracameral cefuroxime (1mg/0.1ml) at the end of the procedure.
On the first post-operative day, clinical examination revealed retinal pallor and oedema in the perimacular area of the left eye and OCT demonstrated serous retinal detachment and outer nuclear layer thickening in the aforementioned area of the left eye. The patient received typical post-operative treatment and no further action deemed necessary. Macular oedema and serous retinal detachment resolved spontaneously on the 3rd post-operative day with optimal visual outcome and no recurrence was noted.
Conclusion/Take home message
Serous retinal detachment can be a rare side-effect of IC cefuroxime injection even at a standard dose. This condition is usually self-limited with spontaneous resolution. Nevertheless, there is need for large, prospective studies to adress safety issues.
