Purpose

To compare higher order aberrations (HOA),modulation transfer function (MTF) and defocus curve in eyes implanted with Acrysof IQ PanOptix and Clareon PanOptix intraocular lens.

Setting

Private Eye Hospital, Thane, India

Methods

A prospective study where subjects implanted with Trifocal IOLs (Acrysof IQ PanOptix, Alcon; Clareon PanOptix, Alcon) aged between 40 -75 years, post-operative uncorrected visual acuity 0.2logMAR or better were included. Subjects with any ocular pathologies, previous refractive surgery, and intra-operative complications were excluded. At 1 month follow up, internal HOA (3rd, 4th and 5th order) and MTF at 5,10,15,20,25,30 cycle per degrees (CPD) were obtained using i- Trace aberrometer (Tracey technologies) for 4mm fixed pupil.  Monocular distance corrected defocus curve obtained in each subject. The visual acuity with each defocus lens ranging from+2.00 to -3.0D (0.5D steps) was measured in randomized order.

Results

59 and 21 eyes were implanted with Clareon PanOptix and Acrysof IQ PanOptix respectively. The Mean±SD age of the subjects implanted with Clareon PanOptix, and Acrysof IQ PanOptix were 57.46±6.53 and 55.29±7.56 years respectively (P=0.25). Third order aberration were similar in both IOLs (p>0.05) however significant difference was noted in pentafoil (p=0.01) and secondary trefoil (p=0.01). MTF was found to be significantly higher with Clareon PanOptix IOL at all spatial frequencies (p<0.05). Defocus curve revealed better visual acuity with Clareon IOL as compared to Acrysof IOL at all diopters except (-3.0D) however the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05).

Conclusions

Significant reduction in pentafoil and secondary trefoil and better MTF was noted in Clareon PanOptix IOL as compared to Acrysof IQ PanOptix however defocus curves were similar in both the IOLs.
