Purpose

To demonstrate the European REgistry for Childhood CAtaract surgery (EuReCCa) and present the first results obtained through this registration

Setting

University Hospital, Single Center

Methods

The EuReCCa is new registry for registering pediatric cataract operations, designed to provide insight into these relatively rare procedures across Europe by allowing analyzing and benchmarking data on surgeon, institution, national, and European levels. We used the registry to enter all pediatric cataract surgeries performed July 2020 to December 2023. Children operated below 1 year of age were left aphakic and in children above 1 year an intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted. Below 6 years of age a posterior capsulorhexis and anterior vitrectomy was performed.

Results

We registered 72 cataract- or lensluxation surgeries in 49 children. Twenty-six cataracts were unilateral (53 %) and 23 bilateral (47 %). Congenital cataract was the most frequent reason for operation; 69 eyes (96%). Complications requiring surgery were glaucoma in 5 eyes (7 %) and visual axis opacification VAO in 5 eyes (7 %). We will present how the EuReCCa can be used and provide valuable insights into the outcomes of pediatric cataract surgery.

Conclusions

Registering operations and their outcomes can provide valuable insights for surgeons, institutions, and healthcare systems at the national and international levels, particularly for rare procedures like pediatric cataract operations. While there are various advantages and disadvantages to using registration platforms, increased participation can amplify their impact. Therefore, we recommend the registration of pediatric cataract operations.
