Purpose

To evaluate the benefit of a pairing approach in refractive cataract surgery with two diffractive IOL with complementary light distribution profile.

Setting

Monocentric retrospective study. Institut ophtalmologique de l'ouest. Groupe Ophtalliance

Methods

Ongoing evaluation of uncorrected binocular visual acuity for distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA) vision under photopic (85 cd/m2) conditions were measured 3-6 months after surgery. Currently 36 consecutive patients were included, and further patients will be enrolled in the coming months. All patients underwent uncomplicated cataract surgery with contralateral implantation of Vivinex Gemetric and Vivinex Gemetric Plus (Pairing approach), two trifoacl lenses with similar optic but different light distribution. Toric and non-toric models were implanted. Uncorrected defocus curve testing and subjective patient satisfaction were evaluated for spectacle independence and visual disturbances between 3-6 months after surgery.

Results

The binocular uncorrected visual acuity testing showed that patients achieved mean binocular photopic UDVA, UIVA and UNVA of -0.04±0.07, 0.24 ±0.12 and 0.14±0.14 logMAR at 3-6 months. The mean uncorrected binocular defocus curve showed visual acuity values of 0.2 logMAR or better in the range of +0,5 to -3.5 diopters. The proportion of patients who never wear spectacles to read small print is 100% and for work in intermediate distance is 92%. More than 80% of patients reported “never“ or only “occasionally” experiencing any glare or halos.

Conclusions

The pairing of Vivinex Gemetric and Vivinex Gemetric Plus with complementary light distribution profiles is an effective and safe surgical procedure for cataract patients to improve distance, intermediate and near visual acuity with a wide range of focus. Patients reported high spectacle independence and low incidence of visual disturbances after surgery.
