Purpose
Higher-order aberrations (HOA) including spherical aberrations (SA) are crucial to retinal image quality and depth of focus. In modern cataract surgery, enhanced monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) aim to improve intermediate vision by modulating specific higher-order wavefront parameters. Therefore, this prospective, intraindividual, fellow-eye clinical study compared the visual performance of an aspheric enhanced monofocal IOL with a spherical monofocal IOL, with a particular focus on intermediate and near distance.
Setting
This single-center, prospective clinical trial was conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Vienna.
Methods
A total of 100 eyes of 50 patients scheduled for bilateral cataract surgery were included in this prospective clinical trial. An aspheric enhanced monofocal Tecnis Eyhance ICB00 IOL was implanted in the dominant eye and a spherical monofocal Sensar 1-piece AAB00 IOL in the non-dominant eye (both Johnson&Johnson Vision). Two to four months postoperatively, intraindividual comparison included monocular, best-corrected (BCDVA/BCNVA), distance-corrected (DCIVA/DCNVA) and low contrast visual acuities at various distances, monocular distance-corrected defocus curves, wavefront analysis, tilt and decentration.
Results
Conclusions
In this prospective, intraindividual comparison between the aspheric enhanced monofocal Tecnis Eyhance ICB00 IOL and the spherical monofocal Sensar 1-piece AAB00 IOL, the enhanced monofocal IOL achieved better monocular intermediate and near visual acuity, while distance visual acuity was comparable in both groups. Decentration, tilt, and HOA were low in both groups.
