Purpose
To evaluate safety and efficacy of corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) in two subgroups of patients with keratoconus 9 years after CXL: up to 18 years and older than 35 years
Setting
In this mono-centre exploratory study we included all consecutive patients who underwent CXL in one cornea center from 01/01/2007 to 12/30/2011 and met the inclusion criteria.
Methods
CXL was performed in all patients according to the Dresden-protocol. Evaluation included best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), topographic keratometry by Scheimpflug corneal tomography and adverse events. We performed a subgroup analysis of all patients up to 18 years of age (18Y) and older than 35 years (35Y) with a follow-up of 10 years after CXL.
Results
The study enrolled 28 eyes (15 in group 18Y, 13 in group 35Y) of which a complete keratometric dataset existed preoperatively and 9 years postoperatively. We were able to demonstrate decreases of all keratometric parameters in both subgroups. Kmax and anterior astigmatism showed a statistically significant decrease in the 18Y-group. None of the eyes received penetrating keratoplasty, no relevant infections occurred in both groups.
Conclusion
Crosslinking results in corneal flattening in both subgroups. The effect is clearly stronger in the younger patients.
