Purpose
The primary purpose of fresh myopic lenticule (FML) implantation as an allogeneic graft to be taken from myopic patients is to increase the central corneal thickness, and the secondary purpose is to investigate the feasibility and effect of implanting it in keratoconus patients using VisuMax Femtosecond laser - Smile module surgery.
Setting
Eye Hospital,Pristina,Kosovo
Methods
Thirty eyes of 15 patients, diagnosed with keratoconus, who underwent bilateral CXL, aged between 18 and 28, and whose central corneal thickness varied between 420 and 450 µm, were included in the study. FML implants were placed in all eyes via the SMILE module. Changes in corneal Q value and central corneal thickness were examined 1, 3, 6 months, and 1 year after implantation.
Results
The preoperative CDVA improvement from 0.79 logMAR to 0.44 logMAR (P < .001) postop 1-year.The preoperative CCT increased from 420 to 530 µm (P < .001). The preoperative Q value increased from -0,80 to -0,48 P < .001).
Conclusion
Corneal Q value changes from conical to ellipsoid after (FML)implantation in cross-linked patients with KCN, it is a safe, economical, and reliable technique that leads to increased visual acuity, increased corneal thickness, and renewal of healthy keratocytes and telocyte-like cells that play a role in stromal regeneration.
