Purpose
This is the presentation of interim study results. The aim of this study is to determine the clinical outcomes following bilateral implantation of a new trifocal TRIVA-aXAY IOL. The central diffractive and peripherally refractive IOL was developed for presbyopia correction and, in addition to excellent visual acuity results at all distances, is intended to reduce the optical side effects of multifocality due to the new optical design with diffractive optical elements reduced to 7 rings.
Setting
Department of Ophthalmology, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany
Methods
A total of 80 eyes from 40 patients will be included in this multicenter study. The TRIVA-aXAY IOL will be implanted bilaterally in 40 patients at a time. Patients are followed up postoperatively at one and six months as well as after one year. In the course of the follow-up examinations, subjective refraction, far, intermediate and near visual acuity, defocus curves, contrast sensitivities under photopic and mesopic conditions are determined. In addition, a patient questionnaire including spectacle independence and a measurement with a halo/glare simulator will be carried out.
Results
6 patients have already been enrolled in the study. At 1-month follow-up, the TRIVA-aXAY IOL showed monocular a mean distance-corrected near visual acuity of -0.05 logMAR, an distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity of 0.00 logMAR and a best-corrected distance visual acuity of 0.1 logMAR.
Conclusion
The new trifocal TRIVA-aXAY IOL delivers promising results. Due to the good visual acuity results in the long, near and intermediate ranges, the TRIVA-aXAY IOL can be considered an interesting alternative to other multifocal IOLs according to the current interim status.
