Methods
Prospective comparative case series, Department of Ophthalmology, Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany. This study included patients who had bilateral implantation of the AcrySof or Clareon version of the PanOptix IOL (Alcon Research, Fort Worth, TX, USA). Exclusion criteria were previous ocular surgeries excluding cataract surgery and ocular pathologies or corneal abnormalities. 3 months postoperative examination included binocular contrast sensitivity (CS) and manifest refraction; monocular and binocular uncorrected (UCVA) and distance-corrected visual acuity (DCVA) in 4m, 80cm, 60cm and 40cm; slit-lamp examination. Additionally, monocular and binocular defocus testing, an interview on optical phenomena and spectacle independence were performed.
Results
The study comprised 42 patients (21 Clareon patients (29 toric, 15 non-toric IOLs), 21 AcrySof patients (28 toric, 14 non-toric IOLs)). There was no statistically significant difference in contrast sensitivity under photopic (p=0.206), mesopic (p=0.443) and mesopic with glare (p=0.210) conditions. Uncorrected visual acuity was <0.1logMAR in all distances and spherical equvalent 3 months postoperative shows no statistically significant difference in the two materials (p=0.471). In the Clareon group 62% (13 of 21 patients) and in the AcySof group 71% (15 of 21 patients) perceived Halos but were not disturbed of them. In both groups 90% of the patients were spectacle independent.
