Purpose
To evaluate the near and intermediate reading performance after binocular refractive lens exchange and implantation of the new Clareon PanOptix IOL (Alcon, Fort Worth, TX, USA) using the Salzburg Reading Desk. The studied IOL is made of a glistening free hydrophobic acrylic and the successor of the AcrySof IQ PanOptix IOL.
Setting
This prospective, interventional clinical study was conducted at a university eye clinic in Germany.
Methods
In this study, bilateral delayed sequential femtosecond laser assisted refractive lens exchange procedure with implantation of the Clareon PanOptix IOL is performed in 56 eyes of 28 patients. Reading performance is evaluated preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Monocular and binocular uncorrected and distance corrected reading acuity, reading speed and the smallest print size that can be read effectively are assessed at 40 cm and 60 cm distance and at the subjectively preferred near and intermediate distances.
Results
So far, 24 patients with a mean age of 55 ± 5 years have been enrolled in the study. Surgery has been performed in 48 eyes of 24 patients. Mean binocular uncorrected postoperative reading acuity was 0.06 ± 0.08 logMAR at the set near distance (40 cm) and 0.06 ± 0.09 logMAR at the subjectively preferred near distance (38.2 cm). At the set intermediate (60cm) distance the postoperative mean uncorrected reading acuity was 0.11 ± 0.12 logMAR. The preferred intermediate distance was 56.5 cm with a mean uncorrected reading acuity of 0.10 ± 0.10 logMAR. Detailed results of the 6-months-follow-up including reading performance will be available for 56 eyes of 28 patients.
Conclusion
Uncorrected intermediate and near reading function considerably improved after bilateral diffractive trifocal IOL implantation. Patients preferred a closer near and intermediate distance to the set distances. Reading function was comparable for the set and subjectively preferred distances.
