Purpose

To evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes after cataract surgery with implantation of 2 types of presbyopia-correcting diffractive intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting

Department of Ophthalmology, Istanbul Medipol University, Istanbul, Türkiye

Methods

Patients undergoing phacoemulsification cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of 1 of the 2 presbyopia-correcting IOLs were enrolled: Tecnis SYNERGY(21 patients) and Finevision POD F(18 patients). Patients were evaluated at postoperative 3rd month. Best corrected distance visual acuities(BCDVA), binocular photopic and mesopic best corrected near visual acuities for 2 distances(40 cm and 33 cm) were evaluated. Binocular distance-corrected defocus curves were obtained and the area under defocus curves were compared for far(aucF), intermediate(aucI), and near(aucN) distances. Visual acuities and defocus curves were obtained with the help of applications installed on a 9th-generation iPad(Apple Inc.). The applications were VisionC(Q Vision) for visual acuities and Multifocal Lens Analyzer(Q Vision) for defocus curves. The measurements were performed under photopic conditions(85 cd/m2), except for those indicated as mesopic(3 cd/m2).

Results

42 eyes of 21 patients for Synergy and 36 eyes of 18 patients for Finevision group were enrolled. No statistically significant differences were found between groups in monocular distance-corrected distance visual acuity(Synergy group -0.02 ± 0.10, Finevision group -0.04 ± 0.15; P = .533). Similarly, no statistically significant differences among groups were found in binocular corrected distance (P = .599), near (P = .857 for 33 cm and P=.606 for 40 cm), and mesopic near (P=.696 for 33 cm and P=.909 for 40 cm) visual acuity(Synergy group 0.30 ± 0.35 for 33 cm and 0.20 ± 0.11 for 40 cm; Finevision group 0.35 ± 0.35 for 33 cm and 0.20 ± 0.11 for 40 cm). Area under the defocus curve measurements also showed no statistically significant difference for 3 different distances(P=.086 for distance, P=.146 for intermediate, and P=.192 for near).

Conclusion

Both lenses performed similarly providing good visual outcomes at all distances. Mesopic visual performances were also similar at different near distances. Defocus curve measurements showed comparable results for both groups.
