Purpose

To analyse  contrast vision, mesopic and scotopic vision, as well as the occurrence of higher order aberrations and defocus curve performance after bilateral implantation of a TECNIS Synergy (Model: ZFR00V). To evaluate freedom from spectacles with regard to far, intermediate and near visual acuity.

Setting

Department of Ophthalmology, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany

Design: Prospective, monocentric, controlled clinical trial

Methods

After phacoemulsification, a total of 20 patients (40 eyes) were bilaterally implanted with the TECNIS Synergy Model: ZFR00V (Johnson & Johnson Surgical Vision, Inc.). Assessments were performed 1 and 3 months after surgery including refraction, uncorrected and best-corrected vision, contrast vision, mesopic and scotopic vision, as well as the occurrence of higher order aberrations and defocus curve performance. These data were compared to the results from a monofocal intraocular lens (TECNIS Monofocal 1-Piece IOL model ZCB00 (Johnson & Johnson Surgical Vision, Inc.)), that was examined in a previous study by the same research group.

Results

At 3-month follow-up, measurements of visual acuity revealed significantly better results at intermidiate and near distance, but no difference in distance visual acuity, in the TECNIS Synergy (Model: ZFR00V) group. These findings are supported by the data in both monocular and binocular defocus-curves. The binocular contrast sensitivity was found to be similar in photopic and mesopic circumstances for both the multifocal TECNIS Synergy (ZFR00V) and the monofocal TECNIS (ZCB00) group.

Conclusion

Better intermediate and near visual acuity in the multifocal Synergy (ZFR00V) group, appear to lead to a superior clinical outcome due to increased freedom of spectacles, without a significant decrease in contrast sensitivity in photopic and mesopic circumstances.
