Purpose

To evaluate visual outcomes and subjective satisfaction of patients after implantation of Vivinex Gemetric and Vivinex Gemetric Plus trifocal IOLs (HOYA Surgical Optics).

Setting

Monocentric Retrospective Study

Methods

Retrospective
study enrolled
consecutive case series of 20 patients (mean age: 64.5 years)
who underwent uncomplicated bilateral cataract surgery with contralateral implantation of two trifocal IOLs with the same addition powers, but with different light distributions. Toric and non-toric lenses with cylinder up to 2.0 D on corneal plan were included.
Endpoints at 3-6 month included binocular uncorrected and corrected distance vision, defocus curve evaluation, reduction in refractive cylinder and subjective photic phenomena were assessed. Dominant eye is not evaluated. Vivinex Gemetric is always implanted in the first eye.

Results

Binocular UDVA was -0.05±0.07 logMAR and 90% of eyes achieved 0.0 LogMAR or better.  Binocular CDVA was -0.09 +-0.05_and 100% of eyes achieved  0 LogMAR or better. Binocular defocus curve showed VA above 0.1 logMAR from _+0.5D  to -3 D. Manifest refraction spherical equivalent was -0,01 ± 0,06 D,pre operative cylinder  post operative cylinder was -0.24 +- 0.28, 100% of toric lenses had a post operative refractive cylinder below 0.5 D. 88 % of patients reported "never" or “occasionally” experiencing glare. 84% of patients reported "never" or “occasionally” experiencing Halo. 79% of patients were completely satisfied and 95% were satisfied.

Conclusion

The initial clinical outcomes of the contralateral "pairing" of Vivinex Gemetric and Gemetric Plus following lens extraction demonstrated good visual acuity across a broad range of vision from far to close near. Glare and halos rates are lower than other leading trifocal IOLs which were previously investigated in the same practice. The excellent VA outcomes and low level of photic phenomena contribute to the high degrees of patients’ satisfaction. Further studies with long term follow-up and larger sample size are recommended.
