Purpose

To evaluate capsular bag stability of the novel Clareon intraocular lens (Alcon, USA) in a prospective study.

Setting

Kepler University Clinic, Linz, Austria. Sponsored by an unrestricted Grant by Alcon (IIT76127871).

Methods

This prospective study included patients scheduled for cataract surgery in both eyes and no relevant ophthalmological co-morbidities. Pre-operatively, optical coherence tomography measurements (IOLMaster 700, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany and CASIA II, Tomey, Japan and MS-39, CSO, Italy) were performed. Measurements were repeated 1 week and 8 weeks after surgery. At the 8 week follow-up autorefraction and subjective refraction were performed additionally.

Results

In total, 102 eyes of 51 patients were included. For this abstract a preliminary data-set of 40 eyes of 20 patients including the 8 week follow-up is available. Mean age was 72.6 years (sd.: 8.6 years). There were no surgical, or post-surgical complications and the glistening grading was zero (no glistening) at all follow-ups. Axial eye length for right and left eyes was 23.07 mm (SD: 0.93 mm) and 23.01 mm (sd.: 0.89 mm), respectively. Post-operative ACD for right and left eyes was 4.59 mm (0.21 mm) and 4.53 mm (0.24 mm), respectively. This difference was not found to be different (p=0.417). Furthermore, the shift in ACD in the post-operative period was not found to be significant (p=0.129).

Conclusion

The investigated IOL showed very good feasibility and capsular bag performance and a predictive post-operative refraction.
