Purpose

Althrough uveal melanomas are well known as the most common primary intraocular malignant tumor, many questions still arise concerning the best approach for their diagnosis and treatment.

Over the last decades, improvements in instrumentation's resolution and techniques have risen the accuracy of ultrasonographic diagnosis of these tumors.

Setting

In our study, eleven cases of choroidal melanoma were collected over a period of two years at the Med 6 University Hospital Center Of Marrakech over a two years period extented from march 2016 to march 2018.

Methods

We report the Ultrasonographic chraracteristics for each patient that has undergone enucleation for histologically confirmed choroidal melanoma.

Results

We performed an analysis of the diagnostic criteria of malignant melanoma of the choroid by standar A and B scan ultrasound.

The ultrasonographic diagnosis was correct in 100 % of ecucleated eyes.

Five patients had a dome-shaped tumor mass, five others had a collar-button tumor and one had an irregular tumor.

By standardized A-scan echography spontaneous vascular movement was identified in 69% of the tumors.

contact B-scan ultrasonography demonstrated choroidal excavation in 63,6% of the melanomas only.

Retinal detachment was noted in 4 cases. Eight were located at the posterior pole.

Conclusion

We conclude to the importance of ultrasound imaging in the detection of choroidal melanoma even in the emergence of several advanced imaging modalities.
