Purpose

To evaluate correlation of measures obtained with two different devices for anterior segment study. One of them is Aladdin optical biometer (Topcon, Japan), with a Placido-based topography, and the other one Sirius+ (CSO, Italy) a dual Scheimpflug and Placido tomographer

Setting

Clínica Oftalmológica Dr Parafita, Ribeira.

Methods

30 patients who consulted for refractive or cataract surgery were studied with both devices as part of the preoperative assessment. Only right eyes were considered. Among all data offered, keratometry (K1 and K2), topographic cylinder(CYL), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), white-to-white (WTW), Q factor at 8mm, longitudinal spherical aberration (LSA) and coma at 6mm were studied, as they are the most relevant for refractive surgery assesment and biometry purposes.

Results

Strong correlation was found for K1 (R=0.996), K2(R=0.974), CYL(R=0.969), CCT(R=0.983), ACD(R=0.809) and WTW (R=0.890). Moderate correlation was found for coma (R=0.694), and no correlation was found for Q factor and LSA. Mean values, standard deviations and range for these parameters were Q Sirius -0.33 ± 0.09 (-0.52 to -0.13) vs Q Aladdin -0.14 ± 0.13 (-0.32 to 0.33), LSA Sirius 0.21 ± 0.07 mm (0.06 – 0.42) mm vs LSA Aladdin 0.28 ± 0.13 mm (0 – 0.76) and coma Sirius 0.26 ± 0.13 mm (0.05 – 0.6) vs Coma Aladdin 0.30 ± 0.10 mm (0.06 – 0.49).

Conclusion

There is a strong agreement between both instruments in the main parameters for biometry, pseudophakic lens calculation, laser vision correction assessment and phakic intraocular lens sizing. On the other hand, Aladdin, which is mainly an optical coherence biometer for pseudophakic lens calculation, showed a higher dispersion of values regarding aberrometry and shape factor, which did not correlate well with those obtained by Sirius+.
