Purpose

To investigate the reliability of correcting Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) formulas in comparison with dynamic contour tonometry (DCT).

Setting

University Eye Clinic, Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Salerno, Italy.

Methods

This study included one-hundred-twelve right eyes of 112 healthy subjects aged from 21 to 77 years, who underwent to a full ophthalmologic exam, including intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement with DCT and then with GAT. IOP values obtained with GAT were corrected with 10 equations and then compared with IOP values provided by DCT. The Student T-test was used for pair-wise comparisons of IOP obtained with DCT and GAT and with DCT and all IOP obtained after applying 10 correcting formulas. This latter test was also used for pair-wise comparison of differences between measurement obtained with and without IOP correction. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results

Participants mean age was 42.24±4.08 years; mean IOP measured with DCT and GAT were respectively 17.61±2.87mmHg and 15.50±2.47mmHg. The mean discordance between DCT and GAT measurements was 2.11±2.24 mmHg. In absolute value, all the correcting formulas, tend to increase the difference between GAT and DCT, except to Śródka formula (p˂0.001), that reduced the difference between the two IOP measurement methods of −0.03±0.85 mmHg.

Conclusion

IOP measurements provided by GAT without any correction are lower than those provided by DCT. Śródka equation provides a statistically significant decrease of the difference between GAT and DCT measurements. Other equations do not provide a valid improvement of the agreement between the two methods, or they provide a worsening of the agreement.
