Purpose

To describe visual and refractive outcomes following surface ablation after at least a 6 month follow-up with a new excimer laser platform.

Setting

Clinica Oftalmológica Dr Parafita, Ribeira, and Clínica Vithas Cadarso, Vigo, Spain.

Methods

We performed a follow-up of 30 consecutive eyes from 15 patients, who underwent uneventful surface ablation surgery for mild to moderate myopia correction (up to -5.00D) with or without astigmatism (up to -2.75D). Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), changes in topography, central corneal thickness (CCT), coma-like and spherical aberration were studied. Also, safety and efficacy indexes were evaluated.

Results

After a mean follow-up of 10 ± 5.04 months (range: 6 – 18), significant differences were found in UDVA (0.15 ±0.11 vs 1.12 ± 0.10 in decimal scale) (p=<0.0001), and manifest sphere (-2.59 ± 1.41 vs -0.025 ± 0.07 D) (p=<0.001*) and cylinder (-0.83 ± 0.78 vs -0.017 ± 0.09 D) (p=<0.001*). Changes in CCT were not statistically different from what the nomogram predicted (55.6 ± 19.45 vs 54.43 ± 20.14mm) (p= 0.7225) while an increase in Q factor (0.19 ± 0.14 vs 0.19 ± 0.29)(p=<0.0001), coma (0.26 ± 0.13 vs 0.45 ± 0.19 mm) (p=<0.0001) and spherical aberration (0.29 ± 0.13 vs 0.44 ± 0.20mm) (p=<0.0001) at 6mm were found as expected. Eficacy index was 1.00 ± 0.09 (0.83 – 1.2) and safety index was 1.02 ± 0.08 (0.83 – 1.2), one eye lost one line and 4 eyes gained one line.

Conclusion

Surface ablation with the new Bausch&Lomb’s Technolas 317 Teneo II excimer laser is a safe and effective option for laser vision correction of myopia with or without astigmatism. Moreover, predicted ablation was very precise, which is important regarding percentage of tissue altered prediction preoperatively to perform safe procedures.
