The perception of the importance of functional vision in preserving the user's autonomy and increasing their quality of life, taking into account the increase in longevity, is increasingly becoming a reality within reach of ophthalmology.
Existing studies in geriatrics and psychiatry increasingly demonstrate that acquired visual impairment has negative impacts on the mental health of users and on the reduction of their autonomy.
This work is carried out in order to develop knowledge and skills in the area of importance of functional vision in empowering the user for an active and healthy lifestyle through the enhancement of their autonomy.
A theoretical framework was carried out and the research question was: “Does Functional vision impact the quality of life and mental health of Users with acquired visual impairment?”. It is based on a systematic literature review.
The descriptors were “Functional Vision, Autonomy, Geriatrics, Quality of Life, Depression, Cataract”. An evaluation of the articles was carried out and the selection of those that best fit the study question was carried out, for data extraction and drawing up of conclusions.
Recent studies and articles have shown that the acquired visual deficit directly impacts the mental health of the user and family, also compromising their autonomy, ability to carry out their daily activities and maintain an active life in a later stage of life.
The risk of falls in these patients, the greater dependence on third parties to satisfy their needs and the faster cognitive deterioration have direct repercussions on the costs for the National Health System and for families.
Committing to the training of patients with acquired visual deficits (cataracts) through ophthalmological surgery aimed at the needs of each person, will allow users to be satisfied with the visual quality they have reacquired, enhance their autonomy in carrying out Daily Life Activities and maintain a active lifestyle, with direct repercussions on mental health.
